Information: Orange Solar Powered Tent With Electronics

Labels:

Camping is always fun. A chance to get away from the world, and live in a world of isolation without any form of electrical aids or entertainment. Well, up until now that is. Orange have just revealed their new solar powered tent which is labelled as a 'tent of the future'. The tent will ensure that all your gadgets and electronics will function during your camping visit, though some may feel this defeats the purpose of camping.

Orange teamed up with American product design consultants, Kaleidoscope, to create this modern day tent which harnesses solar energy in order to power your gadgets and equipment via a wireless charging pouch. The tent uses a photovoltaic fabric to receive the maximum amount of energy directly from the sun throughout the day. There is also an integrated "glo-cation" technology instilled which assists campers in finding their way back to their tent. You can use your mobile phone to send a text message to your tent, which will then cause the camp to glow and become easily identifiable.

The solar powered tent has a wireless control hub which illustrates the total amount of energy generated and also the amount of that energy consumed. There is also a wireless internet signal on a touch screen display, and even a heating system, which kicks into action as soon as the temperature within the tent drops below a certain level.

This definitely is the future of camping..

Information: Nokia Morph A Revolution Of Nanotechnology

Labels:

Nanotechnology looks set yield some seemingly magical functionality in the near future, and a recent concept product from Nokia puts most of the technologies that will be viable for handhelds within the next decade into one fascinating instrument. The Morph does just that, being flexible so that it can change shape from candy bar phone to bracelet. It’s also transparent, has self-cleaning surfaces, can sense and observe and even harvest energy from the local environment.

The Morph went on display this week alongside the remarkable "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA's official website. Be sure to check out the online exhibition here – Gizmag’s readers will love the hours of brain stretching concepts to explore – heartily recommended.

Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: "Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible".

The Morph is a joint nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) and Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia, commented, "We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience. The research we are carrying out is fundamental to this as we seek a safe and controlled way to develop and use new materials." Professor Mark Welland, Head of the Department of Engineering's Nanoscience Group at the University of Cambridge and University Director of Nokia-Cambridge collaboration added: "Developing the Morph concept with Nokia has provided us with a focus that is both artistically inspirational but, more importantly, sets the technology agenda for our joint nanoscience research that will stimulate our future work together." The partnership between Nokia and the University of Cambridge was announced in March, 2007 - an agreement to work together on an extensive and long term programme of joint research projects. NRC has established a research facility at the University's West Cambridge site and collaborates with several departments - initially the Nanoscience Center and Electrical Division of the Engineering Department - on projects that, to begin with, are centered on nanotechnology.

Elements of Morph might be available to integrate into handheld devices within 7 years, though initially only at the high-end. However, nanotechnology may one day lead to low cost manufacturing solutions, and offers the possibility of integrating complex functionality at a low price.

If you’re fascinated with this technology, the Guardian has a nice piece with a bit more info.

Stray hairs can get quite irritating especially when you’ve got a date coming up or a social event where plenty of the rich and famous will be in attendance. Well, we suppose if you were actually invited to such an event you would definitely be able to afford the best forms of beauty care, but for folks who are part of the rags-to-riches story and prefer to take on a more DIY approach might prefer to remove these stray hairs themselves without the pruning and preening of some prima donna beautician who costs hundreds of dollars per session. The Easy Trim from Andis Company is a spanking new battery powered personal trimmer which aims to eradicate any stray hair spotted. Measuring a mere 4.5″ long, the Easy Trim is highly portable and slips into a travel bag or purse, ready to trim hair from ears, nose, eyebrows, beards - virtually any spot that requires a quick trim before an encounter where errant hairs might cause embarrassment.

Accordin to Fred Koeller, Vice President of Marketing at Andis, “Easy Trim is about the size of a lipstick. It has a protective cap that covers the blades and is a lot safer than carrying a pair scissors, even small ones, especially when traveling.” Easy Trim will feature surgical stainless steel blades that are recessed, rust proof and a snap to rinse clean after each use. Each purchase will be accompanied by a couple of interchangeable heads, where one will be used for hard to reach areas like ears and noses, while the other for detail trimming on areas like beards and mustaches. This translates to the magic ability to shape eyebrows within seconds.

Powered by a solitary AA battery, the Easy Trim will come with a sleek stand and a five year warranty. Looks like this would make a great gift for dad if he tends to be an hirsute person.

Information: ISRO Launched SAR Satellite

Labels:

On 20th of April, ISRO successfully launched its first all-weather radar imaging satellite, RISAT -2. The PSLV-C12 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle), carrying 300-kg RISAT and 40-kg micro educational satellite ANUSAT (developed by Anna University) lifted off from ISRO's Satish Dhawan space Centre here at 6:45 am and placed into 550 km orbit around earth.

The PSLV, weighing 230 tonnes at the time of launch, soared into a clear sky from the spaceport in Sriharikota, about 90 km north of Chennai. At the end of the 48-hour countdown, the 44-metre tall four-stage PSLV-C12 blasted off from the second launch pad with the ignition of the core first stage.

RISAT has all-weather capability to take images of the Earth and would also be beneficial in mapping and managing natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, besides amplifying defence surveillance capabilities of the nation. It would also help keep track of ships at seat that could pose a threat.

A jubilant ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said "the year 2009 has started off well. The final moments of the launch were more thrilling than a cricket match as we hit a few boundaries and bowled some googlies." Nair said the performance of the PSLV-C12 launch vehicle was "precise and on the dot".

As per specifications, RISAT is different from previous remote sensing satellites as it uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), equipped with many antennas to receive signals that are processed into high-resolution pictures.

Information: 4G Technology Another Revolution

Labels:

Are you waiting for the next wireless broadband technology? It will be a few years before we’ve access to broadband Internet services that are truly wire-free. However, the development of Long Term Evolution (LTE), the evolving 4G technology for high-speed data access over cellular networks, will be under the gun in 2009.
Despite a host of uncertainties about the pace of rollout for this flavour of mobile broadband, IC vendors are busy getting their designs ready for this emerging 4G technology.

Players in the consumer electronics sector want to avoid the mistakes encountered during the rollout of 2.5G and 3G networks, when interoperable handsets were not available in a timely fashion for the upgraded networks.

For LTE, the issue is more likely to be ensuring that LTE-capable devices are available for embedding into PCs and mobile computing devices rather than phones, since the initial emphasis is bound to be on high-speed data transfer rather than better and wider voice coverage. Terminal availability has too often been blamed for slow rollouts, due to endless options that have made the poor handset designers' and manufacturers' lives difficult.

This won't be easy since the standardisation process for LTE has some way to go, even though the important Release 8 for the technology, being devised under the auspices of the 3GP standard group, is due to be finalised this month. But as the industry is well aware, this will not be the end of the story.

There is too much uncertainty regarding the frequency ranges at which LTE will operate—anywhere between 900 MHz to 2.6 MHz. Network topology is also a subject of debate among operators: Will it be targeted at hot-spots only? Will LTE be a rapid replacement for 2G or 3G? Will it be for data only, or data and voice from the outset?

For chip designers, this means the need for greater flexibility and compatibility. Why? LTE is not the only game in town for 4G; mobile WiMAX is slightly ahead of the game. Chip, customer premises equipment (CPE) and terminal designers will need to ensure a single solution for broadband wireless, deploying base band and RF that support both environments.

We should not expect major LTE rollouts before 2010 for use with data cards and 2011 for handsets. The bottom line: LTE is specified to support multiple bands in both time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division, duplex (FDD) modes, and will evolve to be the first truly global standard for mobile data.

So defiantly it is the good news for environment lovers and even the whole environment. But our past experiences was not so good! It shows the transition from policy to practice is not always seamless.
You remember the fridge mountains? The EU directive to cut the emission of ozone-depleting substances was introduced in 2002, when the UK did not have the facilities to safely remove CFCs from fridges.
While the infrastructure was hurriedly put into place, the pile of fridges grew higher and higher.

WEEE is the fastest growing stream of waste in the European Union. The UK is estimated to produce 1.2 million tonnes of e-waste each year, which until now had mostly ended up in landfill sites.

Microsoft has said that Zune is key to the software maker’s overall entertainment ambitions and will capitalize on — and tie into — the company’s other entertainment offerings. These include the Xbox video game console, Microsoft’s television technology and the media-focused version of the Windows operating system that lets people do things like record and watch live television.Microsoft Corp.’s answer to Apple’s IPod will be built by Toshiba Corp., the software company confirmed Friday, just days after Dell Inc. announced it was throwing in the towel, and its DJ Ditty music player, in the battle against IPod for market share.Microsoft has confirmed that Toshiba will manufacture the WA-based firm’s upcoming Zune-branded portable media player. Toshiba had filed papers with the Federal Communications Commission for a device called Zune, and a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that they were indeed related to its upcoming gadget. The player is said to look very similar to Apple’s market-leading iPod player: online photos depict a rectangular-shaped device with buttons forming a circle at the bottom, not unlike the design of Apple’s clickwheel. However, the Zune player will add features like wireless connectivity, which, according to the filing, is referred to as “Pyxis”. Using this wireless capability, consumers could send and receive files with friends nearby. A “DJ” feature would allow users to stream music to up to four other Zune players in the vicinity. Equipped with a 3’’ screen, the Zune player will reportedly have a 30 GB hard drive, and come in a choice of three colours.

Information: Surface Computers Next Megic By Microsoft Corporation

Microsoft Surface turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, interactive surface. It's the first
commercially-available surface computing platform from Microsoft. The product provides effortless access to digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. Today, it's a30-inch diagonal display in a table-like form factor that's easy for individuals or multiple people to interact with in a way that feels familiar, just like in the real world. In essence, it's a
surface come to life for exploring, learning, sharing, creating, buying and much more. Today
Microsoft Surface is available in the retail, hospitality, automotive, banking and healthcare
industries. Consumers can interact with Surface at select AT&T retail locations, at the iBar located in the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and at select Sheratons in the U.S.
It features four key attributes:
Direct Interaction: Users can actually "grab" digital information with their hands - interacting
with content by touch and gesture, without the use of a mouse or keyboard.
Multi–Touch: Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger like with a typical touch–screen, but up to dozens of items at once.
Multi–User: The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather around Microsoft Surface together, providing a collaborative, face–to–face computing experience.
Object Recognition: Users can place physical objects on the display to trigger different types of
digital responses; in the future, this will include the ability to transfer digital content.

How does Microsoft Surface work?
Microsoft Surface uses cameras to sense objects, hand gestures and touch. This user input is then processed and displayed using rear projection. Specifically:
Microsoft Surface uses a rear projection system which displays an image onto the underside of a thin diffuser.
Objects such as fingers are visible through the diffuser by series of infrared–sensitive cameras,
positioned underneath the display. An image processing system processes the camera images to detect fingers, custom tags and other objects such as paint brushes when touching the display.
The objects recognized with this system are reported to applications running in the computer so that they can react to object shapes, 2D tags, movement and touch..

Information: Apple Developing a $700 Touch-Screen Tablet Anyone Knows?

Labels:

Apple is expected to leverage its multitouch patents and offer a 7- to 10-inch tablet device in the first half of 2010, according to analysts from research firm Piper Jaffrey. Pricing is expected to fill the gap between the Apple iPod Touch and the MacBook, at between $500 and $700. The analysts’ report dismissed any notion of an Apple netbook.

While there is no potential for an Apple netbook, the company does appear to be working on a 7- to 10-inch touch-screen tablet device for the first half of 2010, according to a new report.

In a May 21 research note from firm Piper Jaffray, analysts write that Apple has said it’s not interested in a netbook, which would not distinguish it enough from the competition and would eat away at MacBook sales. Instead, they expect Apple to leverage its multi-touch patents and deliver a touch-screen tablet device.

“We expect Apple to fill the gap between the iPod Touch and the MacBook with a new tablet device (not a netbook) priced at about $500-$700,” Gene Munster, the lead analyst, wrote in the report.

“We are anticipating a new category of Apple products with an operating system more robust than the iPhone’s but optimized for multitouch, unlike Mac OS X. The device’s OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple’s mobile OS and run App Store apps, or it could be a modified version of Mac OS X.”

The report emphasizes that Apple believes that software is the key to success in the mobile device category, as evidenced by the App Store being at the heart of its mobile operating system.

Information: India Aims High: Gigabytes

Despite the slowdown and a fast desktop market of India, Gigabyte, the motherboard manufacturer is hopeful of achieving the “million motherboards mark” it has set for the year 2009 and so on. To achieve this thing, the vendor is unleashing a series of strategies.

Gigabyte is upbeat about the recent consolidation of market share among top vendors. “Quite interestingly post Q2 2008, we witnessed a drop in market share of some of the smaller players. We believe that Gigabyte along with Intel and Asustek have significantly captured the market share at the expense of smaller players. We expect the trend to continue. As the markets are likely to get tougher, channels are aligning with large players who will sustain through these trying times,” said Rajan Sharma, General Manager – MB BU, Gigabyte, India.

The vendor is exploring the C- and D-class city markets aggressively. “The Gigabyte Premium Partner program has nearly 175 partners who stock and sell our boards. As we move to new territories like Orissa and the North East, we expect the number of partners to cross 200,” he said.

Sharma observed that the non-metro market share has grown 120 percent over the past year. With Gigabyte signing up both Accel Frontline and D-Link as service providers, availability of support has reached over 88 locations.

Gigabyte is also trying to improve its relationship with AMD. “We want to increase our market share on AMD platform, and are currently working closely with AMD India. Nearly 25 percent of our boards are likely to sport AMD processors this year,”added Sharma.

The vendor will explore the niche market segment that the system builders address. “Today we have around 27 models of motherboards, and cover a wide range of platforms from the high end gaming and server boards to basic PCs. Hence we are making individual pitches, whether to the Do it Yourself (DIY) geek market, or the upcoming nettop market,” explained Sharma.

Information: Bapu’s eco-friendly vision will come to real life!

Labels:

It was Mahatma Gandhiji’s vision to make eco-friendly indigenous items, specially khadi and Kalamkhush paper. It is said that when Gandhiji gifted it to Kaka Kalelkar the Gujarati litterateur, he is known to have said, “My pen (kalam) is happy to write on this beautiful paper,” that is how kalamkhush got its name.
So, it is heart-warming to know that soon, Mahatma Gandhi’s book Hind Swaraj will be printed by Navjivan Trust on khadi paper, as part of the book’s centenary celebration, in Gujarati, Hindi and English.
Talk about khadi paper and you immediately think about water colours as the paper lends a certain freshness to paintings. It is popular with artists, not only in India, but all over the world its popular. Due to the lack of publicity and proper sales outlets, most people do not know that hand made paper is made in Ahmedabad at a small paper mill near Gujarat Khadi Mandal, which is situated in a lane opposite Gandhi Ashram.
It is also here that the famed Kalamkhush paper is made with flowers, leaves, grass and petals. To go back to handmade paper, it is interesting to know that it is made with pulp of waste and rags which are mixed in a huge processor, individually pressed to the desired size, dried and ready for sale. This same method is used to make Kalamkhush paper with grass, kothmir, husk, rice, jute, silk strands, and flower petals, with poetic names like gulab, resham etc. Colour is often used to make tinted, textured or marbled paper.
So, we look forward to Gandhiji’s book Hind Swaraj, as it will pay homage to the Mahatma and his eco-friendly vision. But, Gujarat Khadi Gramudyog Mandal needs a proper sales centre in the city to showcase the immense possibilities of khadi paper, which is special as it has the touch of the hand that creates it.

Information: Will Apple Respond to Windows 7?

Labels:

NEWS: Microsoft is planning Windows 7 launch for the end of the year. The enterprise is getting excited to finally enter the next generation of Windows. Both consumers & vendors are hoping for the best. But Apple needs to be worried !

Microsoft’s Windows 7 is slated for a late 2009 release. Pundits are gearing up to chime in on its possibility of success. Consumers are anxiously & excititly awaiting the opportunity to finally get their hands on the OS. Companies are wondering if it will be better than Windows Vista.

And the cool, consumer-friendly Apple – is preparing an OS of its own, Snow Leopard, that, it contends, will best any operating system it has ever released. In the meantime, it has made little mention of a possible dilemma the company might have: Windows 7. Will it be good? Will consumers like it? Most importantly, will it boast features that make Mac OS X look dated?

Since Microsoft has said that its most recent Windows 7 release, Release Candidate 1, is close to the final version of Windows 7, I think we can answer those questions now. Yes, it will be good. Yes, consumers will like it. And yes, it will boast features that make Apple's operating system look dated. And Apple will be forced to respond.

Information: Windows 7 Taskbar

Labels:

The Windows 7 taskbar makes me crazy.(even in beta verson!)

It boasts both closed & open applications, similar to Mac OS X's Dock. But when you hover your mouse over the open application icons, you’ll find a thumbnail of every open item of the application. Whenever you move your mouse over an individual thumbnail, it will be brought to the front and fit to your screen. Opening the right window takes much less time in Windows 7 than in Mac OS X. Spaces, Mac OS X's multidesktop tool that aims at keeping you organized and getting you to the desired application sooner, can't compare on any level with Windows 7's taskbar. Windows 7 (finally) provides a much nicer experience when it comes to opening and organizing applications. The onus is back on Apple to improve it.

The impact on the engine performance due to continuous running on SVO and its performance optimization is currently being studied. Activities leading to make production and usage of bio-fuel such as developing value added chemicals from the waste generated during oil extraction are also being supported to make the entire process of bio-fuel generation remunerative and economically viable. As a result of activities initiated under the programme, a technology demonstration plant for manufacturing non-edible oils used as bio-fuel integrated with DG set of 12.5 KVA rating has been designed and tested. This plant is shortly proposed to be installed at a village near Mysore for field testing. The capacity of the plant is 1 ton/day of Straight Vegetable Oil. You all know, how we maintain and facing Global Warming and Green House today. So that's a nice attitude.

Labels:

Under this area, the focus is on developing technologies which promote application of information technologies for the benefit of general masses, especially rural people. During the year, under the project on development of broadband access system for rural applications has resulted in development of a laboratory set up of 50 m range for low cost access. The set up is now being upgraded to field testing for longer ranges . Another project entitled "Farmers' Advisory Systems" aiming at equipping farmers with the information related to the entire crop supply chain has been evolved and is proposed to be implemented in collaboration with IFFCO. Department has also evolved a project on development of set-top boxes providing internet access on television. A project on establishing feasibility of multimedia corridor for health applications is also under implementation. So I think its best for India.

Information: Doctors' pulses, race Newborn's heart out of body

3-day old child was born with a rare disorder in which the heart grows out of the body! Maintenance electrician, a 28-year-old-man and his expectant wife, Kailash, were looking forward to the birth of their child but they did not know that their baby would bring them both joy and anxiety. May 16, at around 11’o clock in the night, Kailash gave birth to a baby boy who has his heart protruding outside his chest! The child, who was born at Shree Maternity and Nursing Home run by Dr Bharat Ateet, is currently fighting for his life at the UN Mehta heart hospital.
Parmar said his wife had been under Dr Bharat Ateet's medical supervision all through her pregnancy. "Besides regular medical check-ups, Dr Ateet had also performed sonography on my wife to check whether the foetus was healthy. Nothing untoward was detected at any stage."
Parmar said he had taken Kailash to Shardaben hospital, too, for a sonography test but no congenital defects were detected there either.
On learning that his child had a rare medical condition known as 'ectopia cordis' (congenital defect of the heart in which the heart grows outside a newborn's chest), Parmar took his son to the civil hospital where he was told that he should take his child to UN Mehta heart hospital for specialised treatment.
Parmar took his son to the heart hospital, too, but as he could not afford the expenses involved, he took his child back to Dr Ateet's maternity clinic where his wife was still admitted. Parmar is currently employed on a contractual job at Bapunagar general hospital.
The infant spent Sunday with his mother at the maternity clinic. On Monday morning, after reports on the newborn's plight began appearing in the electronic media, the child was again shifted to UN Mehta heart hospital for treatment. He is still admitted there and is undergoing treatment for infection.
"I am grateful to media persons for their help," Parmar said. "I have been told that my boy will be treated free of cost. Unfortunately, he has developed an infection because of the delay in treatment. I am keeping my fingers crossed."

Information: U.S. States AGs Looking At Google's Books' Deal

Labels:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - State attorneys general are looking into a proposed settlement Google Inc reached with author and publisher groups allowing the Internet company to digitize millions of books, a participant in a recent discussion of the matter told Reuters on Friday.

A group of state attorneys general discussed the deal in a one-hour conference call on Tuesday, said Peter Brantley, director of the Internet Archive.

The U.S. Justice Department is also making inquiries about the deal Google struck to settle copyright disputes arising from its project to put millions of books on the Internet.

But the deal has come under fire because it is silent on what Google would eventually charge libraries, who fear the service will become a very pricey must-have.

"There was no indication that there was any specific activity planned," by the attorneys general, said Brantley, whose nonprofit Internet Archive also digitizes books in addition to building a digital library of Internet sites.

Google has said the settlement would expand access to millions of books.

"The Department of Justice and several state attorneys general have contacted us to learn more about the impact of the settlement, and we are happy to answer their questions," a Google representative said in an e-mailed statement.

Critics of the settlement say it would also allow Google -- and only Google -- to digitize so-called orphan works, which could pose an antitrust concern.

Orphan works are books or other materials that are still covered by U.S. copyright law, but it is not clear who owns the rights to them.

"My impression is that the questions focused mainly on fact gathering," said Brantley of Tuesday's discussion. He said there was talk over whether the authors of orphan works were adequately represented in the settlement.

Under a proposed settlement reached last October between Google and the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers, Google agreed to pay $125 million to create a Book Rights Registry, where authors and publishers can register works and receive compensation from institutional subscriptions or book sales. A court must still approve the settlement.

Yes, i’m really serious, google have recently rented goats from California Grazing. Google recently posted about this on their official blog. Goats will be used to eat up grass in their campus. A leader will bring all those goats and guide them towards the greens at the campus and goats will roam around to eat up the grass. This is a move by google against pollution control done by using machinery. I really feel pity about the maintainence workers who lost their job for goats.

Information: Procedural Programming vs. Event-Driven

Labels:

Programming:

Event-driven programming can best be understood by contrasting it to
procedural programming.

· Applications written in procedural languages execute by
proceeding logically through the program code, one line at a time.
Logic flow can be temporarily transferred to other parts of the
program through the GoTo, GoSub, and Call statements, directing
the program from beginning to end.

· In contrast, program statements in an event-driven application
execute only when a specific event calls a section of code assigned
to that event. Events can be triggered by keyboard input, mouse
actions, the operating system, or code in the application. For
example, consider what happens when the user clicks a command
button named Command1 on a form. The mouse click is an event.
When the Click event occurs, Visual Basic executes the code in the
Sub procedure named Command1_Click. When the code has
finished running, Visual Basic waits for the next event.
